On Friday, the Reserve Bank of India announced that it will soon issue Rs 10 and Rs 500 banknotes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series, each bearing Governor Sanjay Malhotra's signature.
The central bank asserted in a statement that the designs of these notes were identical to those of the Rs 10 and Rs 500 banknotes from the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series.
All previous Rs. 10 banknotes issued by the Reserve Bank will continue to be accepted as legal tender.
Additionally, all previous Rs 500 banknotes from the central bank's Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series will continue to be accepted as legal tender.
Last month, the central bank declared that banknotes with Governor Malhotra's signature would be issued in the denominations of Rs. 100 and Rs. 200.
In December of last year, Sanjay Malhotra was named the 26th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Shaktikanta Das, who resigned after his extended term ended, was succeeded by him.
On December 11, 2024, he took over as Governor for the following three years.
The color, size, theme, security features, and design elements of the new Rs 500 notes in the Mahatma Gandhi (New) Series are different from those of the previous series. The notes are stone grey, and the Red Fort, an Indian heritage site, is the main new theme. The new note is 66 x 150 mm in size.
