According to a PhonePe press release, the Indus Appstore for Android handsets has had over 1 million installations. Interestingly, 45 percent of users come from Tier 2 cities.
"Indus Appstore's rapid adoption signifies the market's readiness for alternatives that prioritize the needs of Indian developers and cater to the linguistic and cultural preferences of the Indian audience," according to a statement issued by the business.
Akash Dongre, co-founder and CPO of Indus Appstore, stated, "This incredible achievement is a testimony of our team's constant dedication and hard work. We will continue to innovate and improve our app store experience to guarantee that we remain at the forefront of providing a better product experience for both developers and consumers."
In February 2024, PhonePe released the Indus Appstore. It was founded with the goal of building "a more competitive and localized mobile app store economy for India." Consumers can download over 2 lakh mobile apps and games across 45 categories via the app, as per the business.
Additionally, "the app store also offers a brand new short-video-based discovery feature to make new app discovery more engaging for consumers," according to a company release. Furthermore, unlike Google, Indus lets customers utilize any third-party payment processor for in-app billing without incurring any commissions.
Indus Appstore has also formed collaborations with Nokia and Lava. It's also in talks with other smartphone manufacturers. The company plans to pre-install 250-300 million smartphones before the end of the year.
