Kuwait fire: The Kuwaiti government would offer $15,000 (more than Rs 12.50 lakh) to the relatives of the victims of the tragic fire in Mangaf, which killed 50 people, including 46 Indians. On July 12, a major fire broke out at a seven-story structure in Mangaf due to an electrical short circuit in the guards' quarters.
According to the Arab Times newspaper, Kuwait's Emir, Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, has announced $15,000 in compensation for the victims' families. The publication added that the compensation funds would be processed and handed to the victims' embassies. The embassies will ensure that the funds are distributed to the victims' relatives, which will speed up the process and ensure that help reaches the families as soon as possible.
The building was home to 196 migrant workers, the most of whom were Indians. Three of the other deaths were Filipinos, and one of the victims' identities have yet to be determined.
The mortal remains of the deceased Indians were returned to the country last week. Bereaved family, friends, ministers, and officials received the deceased's remains. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan described the occurrence as a "national tragedy". Twenty-three of the 46 Indians were from Kerala.
Kuwait's public prosecutor has begun an investigation into the incident in the Southern Ahmadi Governorate to determine the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the persons. A Kuwaiti native and several foreigners have been arrested on allegations of homicide and inflicting injuries as a result of negligent security and safety procedures following the fire.
