With a 65 percent jump compared to that in the previous fiscal, the 154-year-old Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port or Kolkata Port recorded INR 501.73 crore profit in FY24. Also, the port stated that its net surplus in 2022-23 was INR 304.07 crore.
In addition, Kolkata port also recorded an all-time high of 66.4 million tonnes pertaining to cargo handling in 2023-24. As the port controls Kolkata Dock System (KDS) and Haldia Dock Complex (HDC), there was a combined growth of 1.11 percent due to trade disruptions in sea freight. If we look back into 2022-23, the port handled 65.66 million tonnes.
To enhance productivity, safety measures, business development, and overall capacity utilization, chairperson Rathendra Raman attributed the rise in cargo handling amid disruptions to a series of strategic initiatives implemented by the port.
Furthermore, with the complex handling 49.54 million tonnes in FY24, representing an increase of 1.91 percent, HDC's significant contribution played a pivotal role in this achievement. Meanwhile, if we compare to 17.052 million tonnes in 2022-23, KDS logged 16.856 million tonnes of cargo in 2023-24.
