Starting June 25, HDFC Bank will stop delivering SMS warnings for UPI transactions of up to Rs100. SMS alerts will now be delivered only for transactions worth more than Rs100 (money transferred/paid) or Rs500 (money received). The lender notified consumers via email that they will continue to get email alerts for all UPI transactions. To get all alerts, customers must verify that their email addresses are up to date.
The lender did not divulge the rationale for not sending SMSes for transactions under Rs100. Payments made digitally in India are at an all-time high, as its inhabitants increasingly adopt innovative techniques of transacting online. The UPI payment system has grown in popularity for retail digital payments in India, and its adoption is rising at a rapid rate.
With the use of a Virtual Payment Address (VPA) that they have generated, users of UPI, India's mobile-based rapid payment system, may make instantaneous, round-the-clock payments. In India, the UPI payment system is rapidly gaining traction as a digital payment method for retail transactions.
One of the main priorities of the Indian government has been to make sure that other nations may also get the benefits of UPI, in addition to India. Currently, India has partnerships with Sri Lanka, Mauritius, France, the United Arab Emirates, and Singapore, among other countries, on developing fintech and payment solutions.
In 2023, UPI's percentage of digital payments in India would have approached 80%. According to figures from 2022, India now represents almost 46% of global digital transactions.
