Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., has announced an endeavor to deliver artificial intelligence tools and investments to strengthen internet security, as the growing technology is increasingly utilized to both prevent and commit cybercrime.
Google will launch a new open-source resource powered by AI that uses file type recognition to detect malware, the firm announced Friday. The solution, which is now used to safeguard goods such as Gmail and Google Drive, will be made available for free.
On Friday, the corporation will also present a white paper at the Munich Security Conference in Germany outlining how it is employing AI for cyber defense and proposing a legislative agenda that includes advanced AI research and safeguards for autonomous cyber defenses.
"Our AI Cyber Defense Initiative reverses the 'defender's dilemma,' where defenders have to be right all the time and attackers have to be right only once," said Kent Walker, Alphabet's president for global affairs. "To keep up the momentum, we need policies that both mitigate the risks and seize the opportunities of AI."
Google also announced further research funds and partnerships to boost AI-powered cybersecurity research programs, as well as an expansion of cybersecurity seminars with AI-focused modules.
Hackers are also using AI in their cyber operations. According to a research released this week by Microsoft Corp., state-sponsored criminal groups use massive language models such as OpenAI's ChatGPT to better their strategies and troubleshoot technological challenges.
