Deepak Gupta, a Co-founder and relative of Ashneer Grover, the former Managing Director of BharatPe, has been placed under arrest by the Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on charges of embezzling money from the fintech startup.
According to ANI, Gupta is now at the EOW Police Station and is scheduled to appear before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) in Saket Court. Ashneer Grover's wife, Madhuri Grover, is married to Gupta's sister. Former head of controls for BharatPe Madhuri was let go. On September 19, Gupta was taken into custody late at night
Five people were named in a criminal complaint filed by BharatPe in December 2022: Ashneer Grover, Madhuri Grover, Shwetank Jain (Madhuri's brother), Suresh Jain (Ashneer's father-in-law), and Deepak Gupta (Ashneer and Madhuri's brother-in-law).
Amit Kumar Bansal was the first person the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) arrested in this investigation last month. He was charged with being a member of an organization that paid payments of Rs 72 crore to companies that never existed from the previous directors of BharatPe between 2019 and 2021.
Regarding a fraud case of Rs 81 crore, the EOW filed a First Information Report (FIR) in May 2023 against Ashneer Grover, his wife Madhuri, and their relatives Deepak Gupta, Suresh Jain, and Shwetank Jain.
In a similar situation, Ashneer Grover and his wife Madhuri were recently granted permission by the Delhi High Court to go overseas after they challenged an EOW "Look Out Circular" that had limited their movement. According to sources, the court granted their vacation to the United Kingdom from September 28 to October 7. After that, they will go to Doha from October 17 to October 20, when Ashneer is expected to speak at a number of events.
Judge Sanjeev Narula examined the representations from both sides and granted their permission to travel abroad. Rishikesh Kumar, the Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) for the Delhi Police, opposed the plea.
